In Only Connect, Egyptian hieroglyphs are used to select questions. Six hieroglyphs are used: the two reeds (π), the lion (π), the twisted flax (π), the horned viper (π), the water (π), and the eye of Horus (π). All six are used in the connections round and the sequences round, while only the lion and the water are used in the Connecting Wall.
History[]
The Egyptian hieroglyphs were first used on Series 4. Greek letters had been used in Series 1β3. A joke at the beginning of Series 4 involved Victoria Coren Mitchell addressing complaints that the Greek letters were "pretentious" and "elitist", only to be replaced with something even more obscure.
